Stroke Order Tool

Type a character to see exactly how it's written — stroke by stroke, in the right order.

Stroke data from the open-source Hanzi Writer project. Works for most common simplified characters — some rare characters may not have data available.

Why Stroke Order Matters

Chinese characters follow consistent stroke order rules — top to bottom, left to right, horizontal before vertical, outside before inside. Writing characters the correct way isn't just tradition: it makes handwriting faster, more legible, and easier to remember, and it's what Chinese speakers instinctively expect to see.

Use this tool to check any character before you practise writing it, or to quiz yourself once you've learned it.
